Your manager is more important to your health than your family doctor!
Written by Paul Withers
I heard this quote recently from Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry-Wehmiller.
It’s a very interesting point.
I recently posted a meme on Instagram which seemed to resonate with a lot of people.
Many commented about the stress and anxiety they had from working for a bad boss.
I made the point that I often speak with HR people and when they are in an organisation that is not the best, they are often hesitant to leave as they feel it is their responsibility to influence the change.
It’s my view that yes, by all means, give it a good go, but ultimately if your manager/business is not open to change then your input may be better appreciated somewhere else.
I always feel that it is important to not leave things too long and let them affect you too deeply.
If you are going to look for another job, then you want to try and remain in the most positive mental state that you can.
When looking at this from the other perspective, i.e., of the employer, then it is important that leadership teams understand that they have a significant impact on people’s lives not just in the workplace.
In this post covid world, many people have shifted their focus to improving their personal well-being, and if the environment you are creating is not conducive to this, then you will soon find yourselves having retention issues.
If you are struggling to recruit anyway the last thing you want is people leaving your business unnecessarily.
If you are not prioritising employee well-being then quite frankly you are gifting a competitive advantage to those that do.
What’s your view?
How would you deal with a bad boss? if you are a boss, what do you do to promote well-being amongst your team?
